Retainers Treatment at Peninsula Dental Frankston Vic

Retainers are used for retention.

Retention is a phase after your Orthodontic treatment to maintain the teeth in their orthodontically corrected positions. Retainers resist the tendency of teeth to return to their pre-treatment positions. This is very important as in the first month after having your braces removed, the risk of relapse is at its highest.

Retainers should be taken out during eating, contact sport and when you brush and floss your teeth. To clean your retainers, wash with warm soap water.

You do not want to clean your retainers with anything abrasive (eg. toothpaste) as this can damage them.

If you are not using your retainer it should be placed in your retainer box so they do not get lost.

Types of Retainers

Clear Plastic Retainers

These retainers look similar to the Invisalign aligners. They are custom made of thin non-toxic transparent plastic which is designed to fit precisely over your teeth.

These retainers are removable and are virtually invisible. They can be cleaned with warm soapy water. Don’t expose your retainer to excessive heat by washing it in very hot water or leaving it on the heater, this can cause the retainer to warp and make it unusable.

Fixed Bonded Lingual Retainer

Fixed retainers are not removable by the wearer only in the chair by the dentist. It is a wire which is bonded to the tongue side of the anterior teeth only.

It remains in place for a long period of time and as they are fixed are much harder to clean. You will be required to buy super floss or interdental brushes to clean the interproximal areas under the wire effectively.

Hawley Retainer

Hawley Retainers are made of a thin acrylic which is moulded to fit in your mouth, with a wire that holds your teeth into position. It is simple, durable and removable.

These retainers can be cleaned with a denture brush and denture toothpaste as it is not abrasive. You may also use a special tablet for denture or retainer cleaning which is added with water and your retainer we soak in it for a couple of minutes.
